Pediatric Speech Therapy:

Speech-language pathology encompasses a person's speech, language, cognition, voice and

swallowing and the treatment of the physical and cognitive deficits that result in difficulty with

communication and/or swallowing.  Communication includes speech (pronunciation of words

and phrases), language (use of words, phrases and sentences), receptive language (the ability to

understand what is being said or read), expressive language (use of speech to express self),

and non-verbal communication (facial expression and gestures). Depending on the nature of

communication difficulties, treatments may include oral-motor exercises, practice and drilling,

play-based modeling, and the use of audio-visual aids. Speech therapy may also include sign

language and the use of picture symbols or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

Pediatric speech-language pathology may be appropriated for babies with feeding and swallowing

difficulties and children with learning difficulty, developmental disabilities, language delay, sound

production difficulty, hearing impairment, cleft lip and/or palate, stuttering, autism spectrum

disorders, phonological awareness difficulty, and voice disorders.

Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP):

A speech-language pathologist, or speech therapist, is a graduate of an accredited Speech Pathology program and is licensed by the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association.  SLPs can provide evaluation and treatment of communication, language and swallowing disorders.
