Pediatric Occupational Therapy: The role of an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant is to help individuals improve their ability to perform tasks and activities within their daily living and working environments. Since a child’s “occupation” includes playing, attending school, and becoming more independent in the home and community, pediatric occupational therapy focuses on assisting children with all activities that affect participation in these areas. Occupational therapy can help improve your child’s fine motor abilities for activities like coloring, cutting, and writing. OT services can also address sensory processing issues which may help your child improve focus and attention in the classroom and at home. In addition, OT can help improve independence in activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing, and other age appropriate tasks that are completed in the home, school or community.
Occupational Therapist (OTR): An occupational therapist is a healthcare provider who has graduated from an accredited occupational therapy program and has been licensed through the Ohio occupational therapy, physical therapy, and athletic trainer’s board. An OTR is able to evaluate an individual for the purpose of providing occupational therapy services. The OTR then develops a plan of care which will guide treatment.
Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA): An occupational therapy assistant holds a license to perform occupational therapy services under the supervision of an occupational therapy assistant. The COTA may carry out the treatment outlined by the plan of care developed by the OTR.
